Napoli president sends clear transfer message to Chelsea and Manchester United over Victor Osimhen
Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has emphatically promised he won’t sell the club’s star striker Victor Osimhen this summer. The Nigeria international has enjoyed a stellar season during which his goals have powered Napoli to a first Serie A title in 33 years.
Luciano Spalletti’s adventurous side were crowned on Thursday night after Osimhen scored his 27th goal of a prolific campaign in a 1-1 draw against Udinese. Napoli’s triumph sparked joyous scenes throughout a city that hasn’t tasted success like this since Diego Maradona was in his prime, but already Europe’s biggest clubs are circling.
Both Manchester United and Chelsea are certain to be in the market for an elite goalscorer this summer given their problems in the striking department this season. Both Anthony Martial and Wout Weghorst face uncertain futures at Old Trafford under Erik ten Hag, whose team have managed just 40 goals in the Premier League this term.
The situation is no better at Chelsea where a new centre forward will be a priority for whoever eventually replaces Graham Potter on a permanent basis. Osimhen has been linked with both Premier League powerhouses but De Laurentiis is adamant his prize asset won’t be poached saying. He said:
‘I will not sell Victor Osimhen this summer – no way.’
The former Lille striker, meanwhile, was in no mood to discuss his future after scoring the goal that sealed Napoli’s Scudetto triumph. He said:
‘I am overwhelmed right now. It’s an amazing feeling. ‘We’ve waited so many years for this moment and to be able to deliver the Scudetto to the Neapolitans is something we will not forget and it will continue to live in our hearts for the rest of our lives. ‘I am happy for the squad, for all Neapolitans, now we can celebrate in our stadium and we’re going to enjoy it for life.’
